Observation of electron–hole puddles in graphene using a scanning single-electron transistor

چکیده

The electronic structure of graphene causes its charge carriers to behave like relativistic particles. For a perfect graphene sheet free from impurities and disorder, the Fermi energy lies at the so-called ‘Dirac point’, where the density of electronic states vanishes. But in the inevitable presence of disorder, theory predicts that equally probable regions of electron-rich and hole-rich puddles will arise. These puddles could explain graphene’s anomalous non-zero minimal conductivity at zero average carrier density. Here, we use a scanning single-electron transistor to map the local density of states and the carrier density landscape in the vicinity of the neutrality point. Our results confirm the existence of electron–hole puddles, and rule out extrinsic substrate effects as explanations for their emergence and topology. Moreover, we find that, unlike non-relativistic particles the density of states can be quantitatively accounted for by considering non-interacting electrons and holes.

Nowadays carbon nanoparticles are applied on the island of single electron transistor and Nano-transistors. The basis of single electron devices (SEDs) is controllable single electron transfer between small conducting islands. Based on the important points in quantum mechanics, when a wave passes through several spatial regions with different boundaries, the wave function of the first region di...

The Analysis of Coulomb Blockade in Fullerene Single Electron Transistor at Room Temperature

The Graphene based single electron transistor (SET) as a coulomb blockade device need to be explored .It is a unique device for high-speed operation in a nano scale regime. A single electron transfers via the coulomb barriers, but its movement may be prevented by coulomb blockade, so its effect is investigated in this research. The conditions of coulomb blockade and its controlling factors such...

Electronic and optical properties of graphene and graphitic ZnO nanocomposite structures.

Electronic and optical properties of graphene and graphitic ZnO (G/g-ZnO) nanocomposites have been investigated with density functional theory. Graphene interacts overall weakly with g-ZnO monolayer via van der Waals interaction. There is no charge transfer between the graphene and g-ZnO monolayer, while a charge redistribution does happen within the graphene layer itself, forming well-defined ...

Scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy of ultra-flat graphene on hexagonal boron nitride.

Graphene has demonstrated great promise for future electronics technology as well as fundamental physics applications because of its linear energy-momentum dispersion relations which cross at the Dirac point. However, accessing the physics of the low-density region at the Dirac point has been difficult because of disorder that leaves the graphene with local microscopic electron and hole puddles...

Thermally activated conductivity in gapped bilayer graphene

This is a theoretical study of electron transport in gated bilayer graphene — a novel semiconducting material with a tunable band gap. It is shown that the quantum mechanical superposition between conduction and valence band states enhances the subgap conductivity and facilitates the thermally activated transport. The mechanism proposed can also lead to the non-monotonic conductivity vs. temper...
